This unusual Herring Gull was at first mistaken for an adult Thayer's Gull. However, once the photos were examined, the bird was identified as a Herring Gull with reduced black in the primaries. Such birds are sometimes called "Northeast Herring Gulls." Besides subtle differences in primary pattern from a Thayer's Gull, this bird also has a heavy bill and yellow iris.
These photos were taken with a Canon Rebel XSi Digital Camera with a 100-400mm zoom lens.
